Active Communities

Our Active Communities programme supports around 12,500 people a year to get active to improve their health and wellbeing.

Being active is key to enjoying a healthy lifestyle and feeling good. Even the simplest of changes can lead to big results. As a charity, Edinburgh Leisure is on a mission to help people lead more active, healthy lives and we can help you do just that.

Ageing Well

Ageing Well is a set of activities delivered through our Active Communities programme that support older adults to stay active and connected in later life, offering a range of fun, sociable and low-cost activities led by friendly trained staff and volunteers. Activities include everything from gardening and board games to walking and buddy swimming.

"My grandmother has early-stage dementia and attends Ageing Well. It's so good for her to have at least one day where she gets fresh air and exercise. The volunteers and other participants are all very supportive. It helped with the loss of my grandad last January, as she has found more friends her age she can relate to. It’s really valuable for her physical and mental wellbeing."

  • The Mighty Stride (21 miles)   Holyrood Park – Musselburgh – Leith – Crewe Toll – Murrayfield Stadium
  • The Big Stroll         (11 miles)   As above, starting from Musselburgh
  • The Wee Wander  (5 miles)     As above, starting from Leith

NB. To walk together with your friends, family and other team members, make sure to sign up for the same walk length and start time.

I don’t have anyone to walk with. How can I join a team? Team Ageing Well encompasses a wide variety of people. We’ll have people of all ages and backgrounds, including volunteers, staff, individuals – who will all come together on the day – all kitted out in our Edinburgh Leisure T–shirts and snoods to walk for a worthwhile cause.

Is it a race? No, everyone can walk at their own pace.

Do I need to wear a kilt? No, kilts are optional. With your Edinburgh Leisure fundraising T-shirt and tartan-themed snood you'll be perfectly kitted out!

I’ve never done anything like this before – can you help guide me? Of course!
