Climb - Getting Started Guide
Welcome to Edinburgh Leisure — we're really glad you've joined us.
Your membership gives you unlimited access to EICA Ratho, Europe's largest indoor climbing arena, including climbing walls, bouldering areas and fitness classes at EICA.
Whether you're an experienced climber or completely new to the sport, we're here to help you get started safely and confidently.
Whats included?
Your membership gives you access to:
- Full access to the EICA Ratho Climbing Arena
- Top rope and lead climbing walls
- Twelve auto-belay lines
- Olympic-standard bouldering walls
- Two dedicated bouldering rooms
Looking for additional training? - Your membership also includes access to all fitness classes at EICA Ratho, helping you improve strength, mobility and endurance for climbing.
How to get started
I’m new to climbing
If you’ve never climbed before, you’ll need to complete a Climb Start Up Course before using the climbing facilities independently.
The course will teach you the essential skills and safety procedures needed to climb confidently at EICA.
I’ve climbed before
If you’re already an experienced climber, you’ll need to:
- Complete the Climbing Registration Form
- Attend a short competency assessment at EICA
Once complete, you’ll be able to access the climbing and bouldering areas independently.
I want to try Bouldering
Bouldering is climbing on shorter walls without ropes, above safety matting.
You’ll still need to complete the registration process before using the facilities and we’d recommend completing a Boulder Start Up course.
Booking and Support
Before your First Visit
- If you don’t already have a membership card or fob, we’ll set this up when you arrive
- Please allow additional time if you need to complete registration or a competency assessment
- Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely
- Bring water and take breaks when needed
Equipment Hire
Don’t worry if you don’t have your own equipment. The following items are available to hire at EICA:
- Climbing shoes
- Harnesses
- Helmets
- Belay devices
Many climbers start with hired equipment before purchasing their own gear.
Booking and Support
- Complete your Climbing Registration Form and Bouldering Registration Form before arriving where possible
- Use the Edinburgh Leisure app and website to access information about EICA and your membership
