Safer Places – A Space That Feels Right for You
Creating Safer Spaces to Move at Edinburgh Leisure
At Edinburgh Leisure, everyone deserves to feel safe, confident and welcome when getting active. For women and girls, feeling secure in gyms, pools and leisure centres can be the difference between participating – or opting out altogether.
That’s why we’re proud to be part of Safer Spaces to Move, a UK‑wide initiative led by This Girl Can and ukactive, supporting fitness and leisure facilities to prevent sexual harassment and intimidation and create environments where women and girls feel confident and empowered.
Why safer spaces matter
Women’s participation in physical activity is rising, yet harassment and intimidation remain a barrier for many. These experiences, whether subtle or overt, can undermine confidence and contribute to the gender activity gap.
At Edinburgh Leisure, safety goes beyond written policies. It’s about how people feel in our spaces, knowing that inappropriate behaviour is not tolerated and that support is always available.
Our commitment at Edinburgh Leisure
We are committed to equality, inclusion and respect across all our venues. Our staff receive regular training in safeguarding, diversity and customer care, equipping them to foster welcoming environments and respond confidently to concerns.
We also consider the practical elements that shape everyday experiences, from facility layout and atmosphere to clear, values‑led communication across our centres.
As part of this commitment, we offer women‑only swim sessions at Leith Victoria Swim Centre, supporting those with cultural or personal preferences for single‑gender environments.
Working together through Safer Spaces to move
Edinburgh Leisure is proud to contribute to the Safer Spaces to Move Taskforce, working alongside organisations across the sector to share learning and strengthen best practice.
The project has provided valuable tools and fresh perspectives, helping us review and refine our safeguarding approach. It reinforces the importance of prevention as well as response—using clear expectations, visible standards and confident communication to build trust.
Looking ahead
Creating inclusive, welcoming spaces is an ongoing commitment. We will continue to evaluate our policies and practices to ensure women and girls always feel safe, respected and supported in our centres.
By working in partnership and listening to lived experiences, we’re helping create a future where everyone feels free to move – without fear of judgement, harassment or intimidation.
