Professional Training & Assessments

 At EICA, in partnership with Mountain Training, we run climbing training courses and assessments for a range of qualifications that are nationally recognised, ideal if you are looking to become a climbing instructor either professionally or as a volunteer.

Each Mountain Training Climbing Award scheme consists of a training course followed by an assessment course which is completed after a consolidation period. To attend any training course you must first register with Mountain Training for the award scheme that you would like to complete. Links to register for each award are included with the descriptions below. Climbing Wall Instructor

The Climbing Wall Instructor qualification trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to supervise climbers on purpose built artificial climbing walls and boulders. It is ideal for people who work at climbing walls or at venues with permanent or mobile climbing towers. There is also an optional Abseil and Top Roping Module (often run in conjunction with Climbing Wall Instructor training and assessment courses) which is all about supervising abseiling on artificial structures.  Please note the Climbing Wall Instructor qualification does not include the skills and techniques required to teach lead climbing Registration for this course must be done through the Mountain Training website, please click here.  After registering please call our bookings team on 0131 333 6320.  Please see dates below.

Rock Climbing Instructor

This qualification is all about supervising safe climbing and abseiling sessions on single pitch crags and artificial structures. Whether you're a parent, a volunteer or an outdoor centre instructor, the Rock Climbing Instructor qualification trains and assesses experienced rock climbers to instruct climbing. Climbing Wall Development Instructor

This qualification trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to teach lead climbing skills on indoor or outdoor artificial climbing walls and structures with fixed protection. It builds on the skills gained through either the Climbing Wall Instructor or Rock Climbing Instructor qualifications, one of which must be held in order to access the scheme. Climbing Wall Instructor Abseil Module

The Climbing Wall Instructor Abseil module, is an optional module undertaken by those involved in the Climbing Wall Instructor Award scheme. It's aim is to train and assess people responsible for supervising abseiling from climbing walls. Some Climbing Wall Instructor Award providers will offer the Abseil Module as part of the main training course if the facility they are planning to use is appropriate. Please note training and assessment are booked separately, Mountain training recommend a minimum of six months development between training and assessment.


IRATA Courses

We also run Industrial Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA) courses and assessments at levels one, two and three. These qualifications are internationally recognised and are required for working at height professionally in many industries.  Courses run for 5 consecutive days Monday to Friday Level one course costs £640; Level two course costs £590; Level 3 course costs £590 Level one refresher (for a previously qualified IRATA technician who has allowed their qualification to lapse).  For more information on our courses click here.  You can find more about IRATA on their website here.
