Edinburgh Leisure’s NICAS accredited climbing courses are part of the respected National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme (NICAS), a UK-wide programme designed to introduce and develop roped climbing skills for participants aged 5 and above.
NICAS Courses at Edinburgh Leisure
NICAS offers a structured pathway for climbers of all abilities from ages 5 and over, from those just starting out to those aiming for advanced accreditation. The scheme emphasises safe practice, technical skill, and personal progression, ensuring a comprehensive foundation in indoor climbing techniques and safety awareness
All courses are delivered by our friendly, qualified instructors at state-of-the-art climbing facilities. Participants progress through each NICAS level by completing practical assessments and demonstrating competency across a range of climbing skills. Edinburgh Leisure’s NICAS Courses are split across three classes: Beginner (NICAS Level 1), Intermediate (Levels 2-3) and Advanced (Levels 4-5)
Beginner (NICAS Level 1 New Climber)
This entry-level course welcomes those new to climbing, introducing the basics of roped climbing in a fun and supportive environment. Participants learn essential safety skills and techniques, building confidence on the wall. Upon completion, climbers can safely climb under supervision, which is recognised at this stage.
Intermediate (NICAS Levels 2-3 – Foundation & Technical Climber
Level 2 focuses on promoting good practice for unsupervised climbing on artificial walls, helping climbers develop independence and responsibility. Level 3 further enhances technique and movement skills, equipping learners with knowledge to climb and belay safely at any facility, whether supervised or not.
Advanced (NICAS Levels 4-5 – Lead & Advanced Climber
Level 4 hones the skills required for proficient lead climbing, fostering self-motivation and goal-setting for climbers who seek to reach a high level of competence. Level 5 is the pinnacle of the scheme, focusing on performance improvement, designing personal training programmes, and gaining experience in local and national competitions.
NICAS Clip
NICAS Clip is designed to provide a safe and welcoming introduction to indoor climbing for new participants, including young children. The programme aims to build confidence, foster an understanding of climbing movements, and establish a clear pathway towards further climbing activities. By emphasising the safe use of auto belay equipment, NICAS Clip delivers engaging, gamified learning experiences that make climbing fun while developing essential movement skills and technique.
