NICAS Ascend at EICA Ratho is an inclusive climbing award scheme designed specifically for disabled and neurodivergent climbers, offering a structured and supportive pathway to develop skills, confidence and independence at one of Europe’s premier indoor climbing centres.
Delivered by Edinburgh Leisure at EICA Ratho, NICAS Ascend provides disabled and neurodivergent young people with the opportunity to experience climbing in a welcoming, accessible and achievement-focused environment. The programme has been carefully designed to remove barriers to participation, allowing climbers to progress at their own pace while building confidence both on and off the wall.
Suitable for climbers aged 8 and above, the scheme can be completed through bouldering, auto-belay and roped climbing, making it adaptable to a wide range of abilities and support needs. Participants work through four key skill areas covering safety, equipment, movement and climbing knowledge, earning nationally recognised awards as they develop their climbing journey.
With expert instruction from Edinburgh Leisure’s experienced coaching team and access to the world-class facilities at EICA Ratho, climbers benefit from a positive and inclusive learning environment that celebrates individual achievement. Whether taking their first steps into climbing or building on existing skills, NICAS Ascend helps participants develop resilience, independence, physical literacy and a lifelong enjoyment of climbing.
