Gym Nippers

Our Gym Nippers classes help to develop motor skills, balance and agility.  Progress within these classes will be monitored against the Edinburgh Leisure class competencies and you can keep a track by signing up to our home portal.

We are delighted to be preparing to re-open our doors again on the 26th April. We're very grateful for all the support we have received throughout lockdown and can't wait to welcome our customers back through our doors. The benefits of being physically active are more important than ever and we remain committed to helping Edinburgh keep active and well - always.

It is very important that you read our safety guidelines below before attending any class. These include where to drop off and pick up children at each of our venues and much more essential information to help everyone have an enjoyable and safe Edinburgh Leisure experience.

IMPORTANT - for Gym Nippers
One adult per child in classdue to current restrictions all preschool children must be accompanied by an adult who can physically support them in the class, with instruction from the coach. The current guidance does not allow any coach (whatever their age) to carry out hands on coaching with any child (whatever their age). Preschool classes are therefore strongly recommended to have a ratio of one adult per child to ensure that the child can safely participate in the class and to enable them to take part in all the activities. In certain circumstances, this can increase to a maximum of one adult to two children however this has to be agreed in advance with our gymnastics coordinator or venue management. All children and adults in the area must maintain physical distancing from all other adults (including coaches) during the class in line with Scottish Government regulations. As ever, we are subject to Scottish Government and National Governing Body guidance and this may change

No accompanying siblings: We’re sorry but governing body guidelines mean we can only let one adult per participant (with no accompanying siblings) into the Gymnastics area. We know this may be difficult but there are strict restrictions around the number of people we can have in our areas at one time – and these guidelines currently count all ages in this calculation, including babies.

Please read 'Important Information' above particularly regarding accompanying adults/siblings in Gym Nippers classes.

Three to five-year olds can attend Pre-School Gym Nippers sessions that will develop self-confidence and social skills. Landing and shaping, loco-motor and dance, rotation and rebound are covered in these sessions. Young gymnasts will also learn about levels and direction, balances and shapes, swings and turns, and twists.

This class is a combination of our Gym Nippers classes to allow parents with both ages of children to attend.  The children who are three and above will follow the same structure as our 3 – 5 years classes while the younger children (18 months – 3 years) will be accompanied by an adult and will be supervised around the equipment. Landing and shaping, loco-motor and dance, rotation and rebound are covered in these sessions. Young gymnasts will also learn about levels and direction, balances and shapes, swings, turns and twists.

This pre-school class combines the music and movement of Gym Nippers with the excitement of trampolining in a safe and fun environment. Children will use a range of gymnastics and trampoline equipment to learn skills such as balance, coordination and strength.

Specifically designed for 3 – 5 year olds, this class will focus on jumping techniques which promote self-confidence and social skills while having fun. Coaches will deliver the class using  the trampoline and dive board in the dry land diving area . Children will learn how to land, shape and twist and will be a great starting point for progression to trampolining, gymnastics or diving classes from P1. We ask that a parent please be willing, if necessary, to assist their child.

On our class timetable you can check spaces, request to book a space, or if the class is full you can 'Note interest' in a class like it. Here's how:

  1. Check where and when your class will be on when we reopen and whether it has spaces using the 'Class timetable and availability' button below.

  2. If there are spaces, you can complete a 'Booking Request Form'. Your space is not guaranteed at his stage. We will check and get back to you to confirm we have held a space and what the next steps are.  Your space is guaranteed once we have your Direct Debit instruction and we have emailed confirmation to you. We will not collect any Direct Debits until we can run our classes. Normally we collect Direct Debits on or around the 1st of each month. The monthly amount is calculated over 11 months with no Direct Debit being collected in July of each year.

Are there any opportunities for competition?

Current guidelines do not allow for competition. Usually, every year we run an annual gymnastics display, and an annual gymnastics competition, plus in-house gymnastics competitions at every venue for every child. Throughout the year every child is assessed against specific skills to enable them to progress to the next level.

What clothing is needed?

Children should wear appropriate comfortable clothing that they can move around and be active in, for example T-shirts and shorts or leggings (note dresses or skirts are not ideal). Please tie long hair back and remove any jewellery, and children should take a water bottle into their class with them. They will take part in the gymnastics lessons in bare feet.

Can I be involved in my child's learning?

For Gym Nippers, due to current restrictions all preschool children must be accompanied by an adult who can physically support them in the class, with instruction from the coach. The current guidance does not allow any coach (whatever their age) to carry out hands on coaching with any child (whatever their age).
