Gymnastics

Develop skills, have fun, build confidence and make friends at our fantastic gymnastics classes. We have coached gymnastics for girls and boys in P1 – S6 at a variety of venues across the city.  All children start at entry stage, where they master the basic skills. Children’s progress is monitored against the Edinburgh Leisure competencies and you can keep a track by signing up to our home portal.

We are delighted to welcome you back through our doors and to get back to helping Edinburgh keep active and well - always. We're very grateful for all the support we have received throughout lockdown and can’t wait to see you again soon in our venues.

It is very important that you read our safety guidelines below before attending any class. These include where to drop off and pick up children at each of our venues and much more essential information to help everyone have an enjoyable and safe Edinburgh Leisure experience.

Please book into our Entry Stage class if your child is new to our gymnastics programme, or has had a break and is in Primary 1 or above. Even if they have done some gymnastics before, our coaches will assess all new children coming into these classes and will recommend the correct class for them to move to if appropriate.

If your child has had significant recent experience please submit an enquiry using the form on this page and one of the team will get back to you.

This class is where all children who are new to our gymnastics programme will start if they are in Primary 1 or older. Even if your child has had previous gymnastics experience, or has taken a break and is coming back this is the class to book into.

Our team will work with your child and recommend the correct class for them to move to if appropriate.  There are no pre-requisites required for children to attend this class.

Our Entry Stage classes are the starting point where you will learn fundamental skills and the foundations to build on. The children will gain exposure to different types of gymnastics equipment within this class and start to learn the basic skills on each piece of apparatus.

This class is the next progressive step from Entry Stage Gymnastics.  Within this class children will develop their self-awareness and an understanding of the language used within the sport.  Children will start to show an enthusiasm about learning new skills and progressing.  Within this class children will consolidate their learning and build on key fundamentals that were learnt at Entry Stage. The gymnasts will start to develop and progress onto more challenging skills.

You cannot book directly into this class, please book into 'Entry Stage'.

When children attend the Stage 2 class they will be eager to learn, show good listening skills and have a desire to be taking part in the sport. Stage 2 classes are generally a 90 minutes session (60 minutes in some venues). At this level they will also build on their flexibility, strength and stamina that has been developed through previous stages. On the apparatus the gymnasts will be challenged with difficult skills which will need good body tension and spatial awareness.

You cannot book directly into this class, please book into 'Entry Stage'.

Our Stage 3 programme will further progress your child’s skills. They will see an increase in the length of the class from Stage 2, along with more focus on building routines and learning more advanced skills.

You cannot book directly into this class, please book into 'Entry Stage'.

Our Stage 4 programme will further progress your child’s skills. They will learn full routines on all pieces of apparatus and will learn more advanced skills. This is the top level of our coaching programme.

You cannot book directly into this class, please book into 'Entry Stage'.

On our class timetable you can check spaces, request to book a space, or if the class is full you can 'Note interest' in a class like it. Here's how:

  1. Check where and when your class will be on when we reopen and whether it has spaces using the 'Class timetable and availability' button below.

  2. If there are spaces, you can complete a 'Booking Request Form'. Your space is not guaranteed at his stage. We will check and get back to you to confirm we have held a space and what the next steps are.  Your space is guaranteed once we have your Direct Debit instruction and we have emailed confirmation to you. We will not collect any Direct Debits until we can run our classes. Normally we collect Direct Debits on or around the 1st of each month. The monthly amount is calculated over 11 months with no Direct Debit being collected in July of each year.

Are there any opportunities for competition?

Current guidelines do not allow us to run competitions. Usually every year we run an annual gymnastics display, and an annual gymnastics competition, plus in-house gymnastics competitions at every venue for every child. Throughout the year every child is assessed against specific skills to enable them to progress to the next level.

Can adults take part in gymnastics?

We do run classes for adults and teenagers however currently we are unable to run our adult classes in accordance with Scottish Government guidance.

What clothing is needed?

Children should wear appropriate comfortable clothing that they can move around and be active in, for example T-shirts and shorts or leggings (note dresses or skirts are not ideal). Please tie long hair back and remove any jewellery, and children should take a water bottle into their class with them. They will take part in the gymnastics lessons in bare feet.

Can I be involved in my Childs learning?

At the moment all of our young gymnasts up to and including children in Preschool classes in our programme will need to be accompanied by an adult in line with national governing body and government advice. This is to help maintain a physical distance from other adults and to physically support the child through some skills under the instruction from our coaches.

Parents of children in our Baby Nippers and Gym Nipper classes (up to the age of 3) are an important part of the class where both the children and adults have great fun learning and socialising together. Parents are encouraged to really get involved as the more the parent does then the more the child will take part. Parents are also advised to wear comfortable clothing and follow the guidelines for children.
