Move More Edinburgh

Move More Edinburgh is a programme to help people affected by cancer to get moving. With various activities including gentle movement classes, walking, gardening and group activity classes, there is something for everyone. It’s not about running marathons, it’s just small steps to get you out and active. All the activities are free of charge and you’ll be with others who are going through similar experiences.

The advice used to be that rest was best, however research shows that moving more can actually help recovery and make you feel better.

Move More Edinburgh is a partnership between Macmillan Cancer Support and Edinburgh Leisure and many of the classes take place in Edinburgh Leisure venues as well as local community spaces. Support is provided by our instructors and volunteers.

Full training will be provided including volunteer training, cancer awareness and role specific training.  We ask that volunteers commit whenever possible to one session each week, approximately two hours. Locations vary across the city.

All volunteers will be asked to undertake a PVG check for the purpose of safeguarding both volunteers and participants from harm. We welcome applications to volunteer with Move More Edinburgh and help people affected by cancer to be active.

If you’re becoming more active after cancer treatment, you’ll need to consider how much activity is appropriate for you. This will depend on different things, for example any side effects or symptoms you may have and your level of fitness before treatment.

It is important to set yourself realistic goals and to listen to your body. You should start with gentle and low intensity activities. You’ll be able to build up progressively as you become stronger and fitter.

There are a number of tips that can help you to get started. They’ll also help you stay motivated:

  • Join an activity group or association
  • Walk or cycle to the shops
  • Keep a record of how active you’ve been
  • Set goals you can achieve
  • Take up activities you enjoy
  • Tell your friends about it, they may want to join you
