Many people are unsure where to start when they feel that their lives have become too sedentary and they would like to become more active. 

Moving is good for us and we can show you how. Get active with Edinburgh Leisure - we have many options to get you started and offer something for everyone through a range of programmes for all age groups.  We also deliver a range of health programmes to get active, stay active and achieve more.  

We were all born to move and there is a lot going on at Edinburgh Leisure to help you do just that.  Why not try low intensity fitness classes, swimming, dance, walking, cycling and even gardening. 

We are here to support you and offer advice on the right type of activity and to find something that you will enjoy taking part in. 

The opportunities below are ideal for those who feel it has been a long time since they were last active and are looking for a gentle start to help improve their health.  We provide you with a chance to build physical confidence and offer you support to be more active to improve your well being, in a fun and sociable environment

Physical activity has sometimes been described as a magic pill - not only does it help us feel better and function better, it can prevent and treat the leading health challenges of our time such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancers and mental health. Evidence suggests that we need expert guidance when faced with the idea of exercising after the diagnosis of a particular condition - even when we know that exercise will help.

We offer community-based physical activity programmes in partnership with NHS Lothian designed to improve health and wellbeing. 



Community Access Programme

Designed to support community groups working with people facing disadvantages, encouraging them to make use of our facilities through subsidised access.

Promotes healthy lifestyles by keeping older adults active. Offering a range of free or low cost activities led by friendly, trained volunteers, the emphasis is on meeting new people and getting active.

Get Going

Worried about your child's weight? Want to help them lead a healthy, happy, active life? Then let's Get Going - a family healthy lifestyle programme funded by NHS Lothian. It helps children get active, eat well & achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

Move More Edinburgh

Low level activity sessions for people affected by cancer, delivered in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support.

Exercise After Stroke

Physical activity can assist in the rehabilitation of those who have experienced a stroke. Supports the rehab of people affected by stroke through gentle physical activity sessions.

Fit For Health

Supporting people with long term health conditions to manage their symptoms and live better through physical activity. 

Healthy Active Minds

Using physical activity to improve the mental well being of those living with mild to moderate depression, stress or anxiety. Participants have subsidised access to a range of physical activities including walking, swimming, gym and fitness classes.

Looked After and Active

Our "LA Active" programme uses the power of physical activity and sport to improve the lives of looked after and accommodated children and young people.

Youth Exercise Referral 

This physiotherapist referral programme offers young people (11 to 17 years) with various health conditions the opportunity to access a specialised programme of physical activity to aid their treatment.

Steady Steps

Falls prevention programme, supporting adults who have had or are at risk of having a fall. 

Get Moving

A 12-week healthy weight programme funded by NHS Lothian that supports adults to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

Swimming

Swimming is a fantastic way to get active. It is an excellent whole body workout. Taking part regularly can reduce your risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and stroke. The support of the water makes it low impact on joints, and done regularly it will improve flexibility and strength.
