We all know that being active can have a positive effect on our physical health but research shows that physical activity can be as effective as some medications in treating mild to moderate mental health problems like depression, anxiety or stress. Our Healthy Active Minds programme gives adults (18 years+) experiencing mild to moderate depression, stress, anxiety or low mood the support to get active.
Healthy Active Minds allows participants subsidised access to a range of physical activities including walking, swimming, gym and fitness classes. Now in its 4th year of funding, it’s currently Edinburgh Leisure’s biggest health referral programme receiving over 100 referrals per month.
We have three dedicated Healthy Active Minds Instructors who will support participants through the initial 12-weeks of the programme introducing them to physical activity options and offering flexible support to suit individuals. This approach is designed to encourage participants to find out which physical activities they enjoy and build physical activity into their everyday lives at their own pace.
To be referred to our Healthy Active Minds programme you must be experiencing mild to moderate depression, low mood, anxiety or stress, be inactive at present, living in Edinburgh and aged over 18 years. They must also be referred to the programme by a GP.
This programme is funded by NHS Lothian and is delivered with local health and community partners to ensure that participants get supported access to physical activity opportunities both within Edinburgh Leisure venues and their own community.
If you feel you meet the above criteria and would like to be referred to Healthy Active Minds then please contact your GP in the first instance. If you’d like more information please get in touch with our Healthy Active Minds co-ordinator Claire Ferry at email@example.com or call 0131 458 2188.
