Edinburgh Leisure follows the Scottish Swimming Learn to Swim Programme and offers a range of sessions at our swimming pools throughout the city, from pre-school (3 ½ - 5 years) to classes specifically for the older child (for example the 12+ class).
The programme ensures introduces a range of skills such as floatation, balance, propulsion and breath control which are refined as the child develops the techniques of each stroke. See the descriptions of all the swimming classes by clicking here and for all the class times check out the activity and timetable search.
Children can look forward to regular Scottish Swimming awards (badge and/or certificate) and progress report cards from their teacher in addition to the fun and supportive delivery style. Badges from ‘Tadpole’ right through to a ‘Marathon’ swim are available twice per year and are included in the costs of the lessons.
Teachers are trained to ensure the programme is as diverse as possible, often having rookie life-saving, water polo, spring board diving, synchronised swimming and Aqua Jets sessions during the term. The additional activities ensure the child develops enhanced water skills and confidence, as well as having a fun introduction to other water based activities. Edinburgh clubs offer these activities as a progression to the learn to swim programme and as an alternative route to competitive swimming.
As the children approach the upper end of the programme we host fun galas where the children learn about competitive swimming. Our local clubs attend to help offer parents information on club swimming. All children receive a medal and certificate just for taking part so it's a positive experience all round!
