The plans to refurbish the Royal Commonwealth Pool and replace Meadowbank represent the most significant investment in sports facilities by the City of Edinburgh Council since the venues themselves were built in preparation for the 1970 Commonwealth Games.
The Council’s intention is to build facilities that will inspire the present and future generations to participate in sport – bringing them significant health benefits in terms of physical activity, overall wellbeing and quality of life.
This, in turn, will contribute greatly to the City’s Sport and Physical Recreation Strategy – the overarching aim of which is to make Edinburgh the most physically active city in Europe by 2020 – and will provide modern facilities for public recreational use and excellent competition venues for hosting national and international events.
