Athletics 'Frequently asked questions'.
There are lots of questions you could ask us about Athletics, and we'll gladly answer them all. But to save you having to, we've jotted some of the frequently asked ones below.
Q. What age can my child start lessons? Our athletics programme is open to children aged 3 years and above. Mini Athletics is designed for the under 5’s and teaches basic running, jumping and throwing movement skills. From 5 years, children can join our athletics classes and work through the development programme.
Q. What are the benefits of athletics? The athletics disciplines of running, jumping and throwing are fundamental movement skills that underpin all sport and physical activity. By developing these skills early in life, your child will benefit from improved physical strength and co-ordination that will help their sports performances. Coming along to athletics is also a fun way of staying fit and healthy whilst developing active lifestyle habits.
Q. What does my child need to wear? Participants should be appropriately dressed for sporting activity. It is advisable that they wear trainers with shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt and sweatshirt. Long hair should be tied back.
Q. Do they need any equipment? Participants need only bring some water as all equipment required for the class is provided at the venue.
Q. Do they need any previous experience? No previous experience is required for our classes and children can join at any age as our coaches are able to adapt sessions to suit the needs of the participants.
Q. What are the term dates? Our classes run on a termly basis parallel with the school term. For class start and finish dates for the current school term, please contact reception at the venue most convenient for you.
Q. How long does a term last? Depending on when your child joins, a term can last between 8 and 12 weeks.
Q. Do I need to stay with my child? You do not need to stay with your child as our coaches are fully qualified and disclosure checked. If your child has additional support needs please take some time to talk these through with the coach so he/she can adapt the programme for your child and request your presence if necessary.
Q. How much does it cost? Classes cost £3.80 each and are payable at your venue reception.
Q. Do I need to book? This depends on the venue you attend. Some require you to block book the whole term, while others allow you to pay as you go. To find out the procedure at your chosen venue, please contact their reception directly.
