This month brings news from:

ClubSportEdinburgh

On Tuesday 23rd April Douglas Adamson announced the arrival of ClubSportEdinburgh to the local press. The first chair of Edinburgh’s new sports forum was keen to emphasise the need for the capital’s sports clubs to have an independent voice:

“ClubSportEdinburgh brings together clubs of all shape and sizes, from American Football to Water Polo. In recent years the voice of sport in Edinburgh and particularly its key stakeholders - the clubs - have not had a platform to influence major decisions. ClubSportEdinburgh will provide a forum to allow different clubs to work together, learn from each other and make sure that sports clubs are heard at all levels in the Capital and their efforts are recognised as the vital part of society that participation sport is.”

“With sport gaining a bigger profile each passing year and more major events coming to the UK, sport is rising on the political agenda. ClubSportEdinburgh intends to fully represent the clubs’ interests throughout the city and is dedicated to ensuring that they grow, develop and prosper and will help clubs share skills, fund-raising techniques and best practice – join us now at http://www.clubsportedinburgh.org/

EL service of the month

Active Futures

Active Futures is a Big Lottery funded initiative geared at encouraging today’s young adults (aged 16-25 years) to become and remain more active.

Edinburgh Leisure’s Active Futures programme was established in August 2006 to support young adults within Edinburgh. This project has delivered numerous 10 week activity programmes which are free to individuals. Programmes have included trampolining, gym sessions, dance, climbing and Sports Leader courses.

The primary aim of these activity programmes is to provide an opportunity for individuals to try a new activity in a supportive environment and then signpost the individual to existing provisions in their community and encourage them to continue to remain active following the Active Futures programme.

More recently Active Futures has piloted work with existing clubs promoting the clubs sport and attracting a new audience to the sport and the club. Working with club coaches has really added another strand to the programme not only has it meant that we have been able to provide a wider range of sports, including, American Football and Ice Hockey but it also means that the exit pathway for these young people is even easier!

An example of this partnership working is through the work with Tom Cramb Ministries (American Football) and Edinburgh Capitals (Ice Hockey).

“Active Futures identified a small group of young adults from Wester Hailes who were keen to take part in an American Football programme. Tom Cramb who is an established American Football coach agreed to coach this group of young men. The programme went down well with the boys who attended and following the programme they were invited by ‘Coach’, Tom Cramb to attend the Edinburgh Wolves training sessions at the Jack Kane Centre. A few of these young men have taken up this opportunity and now attend training sessions with the Edinburgh Wolves which means that post Active Futures involvement these boys are able to remain more physically active.”

If your club is looking to recruit new participants aged 16-25years and you could provide a coach for a community programme please get in touch with the Edinburgh Leisure Active Futures co-ordinator, Claire Ferry who would love to work with more clubs in Edinburgh.
