JUNIOR POWERBOAT (8 to 11yrs)

(RYA Level 1)

Two-day courses providing a safe introduction for children driving small planning speed-boats. The courses are available at either weekends, or on weekdays during the school holidays.

YOUTH POWERBOAT (12 to 16 yrs)

 

(RYA Level 2)

Young drivers of powerboats are given an endorsed certificate that states that they may only drive when under the supervision of a responsible adult.

INTERMEDIATE POWERBOAT (DAY CRUISING)

A recent introduction to the powerboat scheme, the course offers an intermediate stage to encourage boaters to travel further afield. The syllabus includes pilotage, navigation, passage planning, rough weather precautions, basic use of GPS, boat handling etc.

Applicants must be of Level 2 standard, and should consider obtaining a Radio Operators certificate and !st Aid qualification.

ADVANCED POWERBOAT

This course is aimed at more experienced powerboaters who want to venture further afield, for either leisure or commercial reasons.

Course content includes high speed boat handling, advanced manoeuvres, use of GPS, chart plotters and radar, night driving and passage planning, etc.

Previous Experience: Applicants must hold (or be at the standard of) the Intermediate Powerboat Certificate and have a knowledge of navigation up to Dayskipper standard. They must also hold a valid 1st Aid certificate and a VHF/SRC radio operators certificate.

N.B. Applicants successfully completing the course will be given a course completion certificate. As of January 1st 2005 the Advanced Powerboat qualification may only be obtained by independent examination arranged by RYA

Code of Practice Qualifications

The Level 2 and the Advanced Powerboat Certificates are accepted by the Marine Coastguard Agency as qualifications for commercial vessels. Details are found in the relevant codes (e.g. for workboats, fishing vessels, training vessels, etc) obtainable from HMSO.

 

RYA SAFETY BOAT COURSES

All sailing club rescue-boat drivers, sailing instructors and others helming recreational safety boats should consider this course.

The syllabus covers all aspects of towing, and recovering capsized sailing dinghies, windsurfers and other craft, and accompanying fleets of racing and cruising dinghies.

Applicants must hold the Level 2 Powerboat Certificate and should have considerable sailing and powerboating experience.
