Royal Commonwealth Pool

At this stage it is envisaged that the Royal Commonwealth Pool will close for refurbishment late 2008 (following the Beijing Olympics), re-opening – if all goes to plan – towards the end of 2010. This is seen as the timeliest schedule if we are to minimise the impact on our crop of international swimming (and diving) stars.

The initial bid to sportscotland in 2005, who are contributing towards the cost of the facilities, detailed the following facilities:

  • a 50m, 8 lane pool for specialist training;
  • a re-orientated 25m diving area, with moving floor which, when not required for diving, can be used as a 25m pool;
  • a 25m pool with moving floor to accommodate “warm up pool” provision, swimming lessons and informal play;
  • new dry soft play facilities;
  • a refurbished and expanded gym and three fitness studios;
  • a new changing village;
  • multi function area, including meeting and conference rooms and a ‘youth zone’;
  • a ‘spa’ facility
  • a ‘dry-dive’ facility – including trampolines, diving boards & a special harness system – necessary if the Royal Commonwealth Pool is to be considered as a ‘centre of excellence’

It is estimated that the project will be complete by the end of 2010.

We have had confirmation that, if Glasgow is successful in its bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the Royal Commonwealth Pool would accommodate all diving competitions. Great news!
