Sighthill
Why not refurbish or rebuild Meadowbank?
Meadowbank Sports Centre no longer meets the needs of our many customers. As one of the first purpose-built leisure centres in the UK, its layout, technical provision and finish reflects its 1960s heritage and, further, the stadium itself is the wrong design for current and future needs, including being uncovered on three sides.
Refurbishment was initially considered but an independent design team confirmed that it would be impossible to carry out with the current structure. So, to ensure that we create a facility that meets the needs and expectations of sports governing bodies, customers and health and safety regulations, we need a new centre; hence the Council’s decision to build a new centre at Sighthill.
The range of facilities approved by the Council for Sighthill includes:
- Covered seated stadium with an international standard athletics facility, rugby pitch and 6000 seats (with the capacity to include a further 4000 temporary seats when required);
- Outdoor synthetic and grass pitches;
- Rugby/football practice area;
- 12-court sports hall with seating for 1,500;
- 6-court sports hall;
- 100-station gym, two fitness studios and one martial arts studio;
- 132m indoor straight running track including facilities for throws and jumps training;
- Gymnastics training hall;
- Administrative, meeting/conference and club rooms.
At this stage the Council are advising that the earliest achievable date for completion would be May 2011. No decision has been made as yet on when Meadowbank Sports Centre will close – although previous Council reports have always referred to Meadowbank closing just prior to Sighthill opening.
