Activator Camps
Activator Camp Changes For many years, Edinburgh Leisure has offered Activator Camps which have been registered and regulated with the Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care (Care Commission). The Care Commission however, has now become part of a new body called Social Work and Social Care Improvement Scotland (SCSWIS), who are the regulator for care services in Scotland. While our Activator Camps continue to be very popular and we continue to provide them, from the 31 March 2011 they have been de-registered.
This year Activator camps will still be provided at Meadowbank Sports Centre, Drumbrae Leisure Centre, Gracemount Leisure Centre, Queensferry High Recreation Centre and Craiglockhart Leisure & Tennis Centre. Please be assured that we will continue to provide the same high standard and quality experience for your children, full of a variety of activities for them to enjoy during the holiday period. None of the activities on offer will change as a result of this de-registration and we are looking forward to welcoming your family through our doors once again to help them enjoy a healthy and happy holiday.
What de-registration means for Activator Camps Our Activator Camps have operated as a registered day care service for many years, however from 2011 onwards; a care specific qualification requirement comes into being for workers within the care services. As a result, we have had to withdraw our registration from the Care Commission (SCSWIS), as it is impractical for us to meet the required level of childcare qualifications for our Centre Managers, Activator Leaders and Supervisors.
Our Activator staff, who are recruited on a seasonal basis for the duration of the holiday camp, go through a rigorous competency based selection process. A large number are training to be teachers and only seek work during the holiday periods, or are qualified sports coaches. In November 2010, registration of childcare workers with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) became compulsory for managers of day care of children services. Registration will be compulsory for practitioners from 30 March 2012 and for support workers from 30 September 2015. Edinburgh Leisure Centre Managers would therefore require a degree level Childhood Practice Award to allow us to continue to meet the qualification requirements. Edinburgh Leisure’s core purpose is the provision of sport and leisure services and cannot meet these childcare requirements.
Childcare Vouchers and Working Tax Credit The consequences of our decision to deregister may affect your ability to pay for your child’s participation at the Activator Camps, as they will no longer be registered childcare services. Childcare Vouchers or your ability to claim back the cost of the Activator Camps if you are in receipt of Working Tax Credit will no longer be available.
Future Activator Camps Edinburgh Leisure remains fully committed to providing excellent standards, high quality of care and enjoyment for your children. We have our own internal quality systems, and a robust recruitment and selection assessment process, ensuring we continue to offer a quality, value for money service to your children during the holiday period and throughout the year.
