Start Sailing - Introduction to Dinghies
If you have never been sailing before but want to give it a try then this is the way to get started! There is a choice of either a weekend (i.e. Saturday & Sunday) or four evenings spread over 2 weeks. By the end of the course you should be able to rig the sails, act as helm and crew, and be capable of manoeuvring the boat safely in moderate winds under the supervision of an instructor.

We hope that after attending this course you will want to learn more about sailing by booking onto a Level 2 (basic skills) course.

RYA Level 2 Dinghy Courses - Basic Skills
The RYA Level 2 certificate gives the chance to really get to grips with the exciting sport of dinghy sailing. This is essentially a practical course with most time spent out on the water learning all the essentials, but there is also an important theory element. A wide range of skills is involved and our aim by the end of the course is that you should be able to safely rig, go out for a sail (and come back!) independently.
Previous Experience: Applicants for the weekend or evening classes should have at least two days previous experience - one of our ‘Taster’ courses ( page…) would be ideal. Previous experience is also preferable, but not essential, for the five-day midweek courses.

Sailing Single-Handers
Many people learn to sail in two or three man dinghies, but have a preference for sailing on their own, or don’t have a crew to sail with. Port Edgar has a fleet of Topaz single-handed dinghies which are ideal for these weekend courses.

The syllabus will include rigging, launch and recovery, tacking and gybing procedures and general sailing skills. Applicants should be of RYA Level 2 standard.

Sailing single-handers is great fun and very satisfying, as progress depends entirely on your own skill and effort. So just go for it – come along and join in!

Improvers’ Courses for Intermediate/Advanced Sailors
What would you like to do?’ is one of the first questions asked by our staff on this course.

As a non certificate course there is no syllabus to adhere to so our instructors can concentrate on helping you improve your personal skills. Possibilities will include improving technical skills, sailing single-handers or catamarans, planning and undertaking day trips, working with spinnakers and trapeze etc., etc.

If you are working towards the RYA modules or simply have not sailed for a while since your RYA level 2 then this is a great course for you
