Visitors to Port Edgar will find no shortage of attraction in and around South Queensferry.

This picturesque little town lies between the Forth Road and Rail Bridges on the south side of the River Forth. The town takes it’s name from ‘the Queens Ferry’ for it was here that in the 11th century Queen Margaret, wife of Malcolm III (Canmore), King of Scotland, whose court was in Dunfermline required to travel regularly to and from Edinburgh. Her likeness appears on the old burgh ‘coat of arms’.

The town boasts many fine 17th century buildings including the Church, the Tolbooth and the Hawes Inn, a former coaching inn described in Sir Walter Scott’s novel ‘The Antiquary’ and by Robert Louis Stevenson who featured it in ‘Kidnapped’.

Situated close to the town are two of Scotland’s finest stately homes, Dalmeny House home to the Earls of Rosebery for over 300 years and Hopetoun House, built around the turn of the 17th century, the home of the Marquis of Linlithgow. Both are open seasonally to the public.

During the summer months, ‘The Maid of the Forth’ sails regularly to Inchcolm Island where you can visit a unique 12th century abbey.

Whilst being an historic town South Queensferry offers the visitor every facility that could be expected including guest houses, hotels, numerous shops, quaint pubs and a host of restaurants catering for every taste.

Further afield, yet still within easy reach by car or bus is Scotland’s capital city Edinburgh with all it has to offer the visitor to the area. Nearby West Lothian is a district steeped in history, with outstanding buildings to be investigated, beautiful countryside to be explored and many sporting activities to be enjoyed.
