Fitness Classes

Q: What Fitness Classes do you offer?
A: Edinburgh Leisure has over 450 fitness classes per week and hosts a number of the Les Mills Body Training System (BTS) classes including the popular BODYPUMP, BODYCOMBAT, BODYBALANCE, BODYSTEP, BODYJAM. With several other types of aerobic, dance, relaxation and water based classes, we have something for everyone with a range of options adapted to different needs and levels. Come along and be taught by some of the most experienced instructors in the city.

Q: Do I have to book or can you turn up at the start of the class?
A: Booking is not mandatory, however, many of our classes are extremely busy, so it is advisable. Booking can be done by phone or in person up to 7 days in advance. Please be aware that if you cancel your booking with less than 24 hours notice you will be liable to pay for the booking.

Q: How much do the classes cost?
A: Our classes range in cost, but start from just £5.50.

Q: What will fitness classes do for me?
A: Every class is different but in general classes will:

  • Tone and shape key muscle groups
  • Burn calories for a leaner body
  • Improve posture, core stability and strength
  • Improve your general fitness.

Q: What age can I begin classes?
A: You can attend most fitness classes from age 14. For Bodypump & Pilates you need to be aged 16 or above.

Q: I have never exercised before, which class would suit me?
A: It is best to start with a low impact class such as, Aerobics. This will allow you to familiarise yourself with the demands of the session. Our instructors can advise you on the range of classes on offer.

Q: What do I wear to classes?
A: Always wear comfortable, supportive trainers, socks are optional but they will stop your feet rubbing and could protect you from blisters. The rest of your workout gear should be comfortable. What we do insist on is that your clothes are safety-minded so if you’re going to wear extra-long wide-leg trousers be careful as you could trip on them.

Q: Should I bring anything else?
A: Yes bring money for the lockers to keep your kit safe and out of the way while you enjoy your class, bring a water bottle and stay hydrated and you should consider bringing a sports towel too.

Q: Can I attend a class if I am not a member?
A: Yes. You can pay at reception or pay in full over the telephone to confirm your booking. (Switch, Visa, MasterCard & Amex accepted)

Q: Can I just turn up to a class?
A: Yes. It is advised however that you contact the venue of the class to ensure that there is space available, particularly during evening times.

Q: I’m a member, do I have to attend classes at the site I joined?

A: No Edinburgh Leisure members, as with anyone else, can choose the venue that suits them best. Sometimes it’ll be the venue you joined at and other times somewhere else will be better for you.

Q: Do I have to complete a Bodypump Technique before taking part Bodypump in a class?
A: Yes. This is a specialised session which demonstrates technique and explains class content, keeping you safe and helping you get the most from the class.

Q: How fit do I need to be to attend a class?
A: Classes are designed for everyone but having moderate fitness levels will enable you to get the most from the workout.

Q: I am pregnant can I still continue with exercise?
A: It is best to seek advice from your GP on the type of training and exercise you should take. Many expectant mothers can exercise as normal for most of the pregnancy. Always ensure the instructor is aware of your condition.

Q: How often should I attend a class?
A: Classes are best done with a rest day in between them. For best results try to attend three classes per week.

Q: Are there any new classes to try?
A: Yes any new additions to the timetable are highlighted in orange (in the printed version or downlaodable pdf) so they’re easy to spot. We’ve just added Capoeira to our timetables so that’s something completely new to try.

Q: What is Get Up & Go?
A: The sessions are tailored to provide a good workout for the older adult with an added social element. Please check the activity search for all sessions.
